Sallygrain is a stream which starts on the high moors between the North Pennine hills of Burnhope Seat and Dead Stones and joins Scraith Burn to form Burnhope Burn which after being dammed forms the River Wear when it meets Killhope Burn at Wearhead.
This moorland tramp began at the south shore car park of Burnhope Reservoir in Upper Weardale. We followed the south shore to where the Burnhope burn flows into the reservoir. Leaving the landrover tack we headed straight for the top of Burnhope Seat at 746 metres; this is the highest point in the old County of Durham.
The county fenceline is followed to the next summit of dead Stones with it's fine cairn and small stone shelter.
The return was along the ridge over Lamb's Head and Highwatch Currick before a walled lane lead off the moor to the road near the reservoir.
Weather: dry, sunny and cold. Owing to the pathless nature and, in places, huge peat groughs this is best tackled on a frosty winters day. Just over 9 miles.

Like it. Could be a good route to follow as I've already "bagged" Great Stony Hill.

I'm waiting for similar conditions then I'll be bagging the two Hewitts up there. Some good walking to be had in the (largely overlooked) North Penninines. I've come to enjoy my recent forays there.

Fingers crossed then, Colin :D Yes, some good walking there but so much better if we've had dry weather for awhile
