Thinking about meeting bears on the trail is a new risk for me here in the US, but like you say it's very unlikely. I know the things to do but should probably look at getting some spray/bangers.

having looked up West Virginia I found this....
The current statewide population of black bears in West Virginia is estimated at over 8,000. They occur in at least 38 counties. ......get yourself down to the hiking store for some bear spray
