Hello, hope you are all well and out walking, this saturday we didn't travel far into the Peak District but tackled a lovely little walk with a couple of cracking little hills. We parked up at Earl Sterndale and made our way to Parkhouse Hill, the first of two Reef Knolls or Atolls. This part of the walk had been out of bounds until the Countryside & Rights of Way Act of 2000. We got our first views of the limestone hills.

As we got closer
It was a nice walking day and a bit chilly as we neared the foot of Parkhouse Hill.

Wrapped up
We were soon on the summit.

Now we could see our route ahead along to Chrome Hill.

To Chrome Hill
As we made our way up the first ridge we could look back towards Parkhouse Hill.

Although not that high these two hills looked quite majestic from some angles

Hill or mountain?
Of course we always find snow to play in,never mind how deep it is

Snow regrets
We soon left the hills behind, one more look back

Our hills
We then passed the raceway at High Edge and made our way to the cars but one last question for non gang members,we passed this building. Anyone know what it was used for,no prizes :( but will download a broader photo to show the answer

Those are some pretty geologically interesting looking hills. Very peculiar :)

Hi Milesy, won't bore you with details, have a look in Wikipedia for reef knoll, there are others in Dovedale south, they offered up some great views :D

The Dragon's Back!!

Chrome Hill brings back some memories :D It used to be that there was no public access to Parkhouse Hill - great if this is no longer the case 8)

I've seen photos of these before - they look really impressive. More so because they are so small they barely show up on the 1:50,000 map! Nice report.

Sounds like a good walk. I love the Peak District.

I think it's the only place where if it's wet and windy i like it even more!

They look spectacularly steep! You've got me googling them now to see where they are (although i don't normally go to the Peak District at all...

Wow - while googling saw that some of our local hills are actually 'reef knolls' so essentially the same thing - Elbolton et al - near Thorp/Grassington in the Dales... unfortunately, I don't think you'd get away with going up most of those without some angry farmer challenging you...

Gosh, it just shows it is not the huge heights that matter, it was a bit precarious coming off as it was quite steep and icy, and Alan suggested it might be time to put the fifth point of contact into use,our botties!
