Great report. The stories of the guides actions reminded why I have avoided it though. Well done for being brave enough.

Absolutely fantastic achievement and wonderful, captivating tale. Shame that your camera gave up the ghost but thankfully you were saved by the phone....otherwise you would have had to go back :shock: ...... :lol:

Sorry, that's kind of megalomania. Matterhorn is possible without a guide due to its crowding, but there are other high summits with really difficult pathfinding and VERY unstable weather conditions. Local guides know their paths, they know about the local weather difficulties (the biggest hazard by lightyears above 3000 meters) and can read the weather, enabling them to decide when it's not safe to continue. 95% of the fatalities in the Alps happen on tours without guides, and 70% are "experienced" mountaineers!
