Having originally only planned a 2 day, 1 night trip to the Lakes I managed to squeeze another night and day out of my kit and clothes. The question then became what to do on the extra day, Saturday 29th November, as all the indications were that the weather was going to be good.
I tend to do "rounds" when I can as finishing at you starting point, ie where your transport is, seems to make sense to me. I also kind of wanted a walk that would leave me closer to home (Newcastle) so the Eastern side of the Lakes seemed to fit the bill. After searching on WH for a while I noticed this round, or at least some variations of it. So thanks must go to poppiesrara, because this is basically his route, although done the opposite way round.
I got back into the hills in June of last year, having done some walking many years ago. As I mention below Watsons Dodd may not be the best of hills, but it was my 100th Wainwright and does afford some nice views, so for me it will be one I remember for some time. That being said I think I'll be picking a better one for the next memorable milestone hill.
- Clough Head from the Old Coach Road.
- Great Dodd from the Eastern side of Clough Head.
- Blencathera in the morning sun.
- Great Dodd from the top of Clough Head.
- The Scafells and friends in the West.
- What a way to spend a day!
- Towards Helvellyn.
- Looking West again.
- Looking South from my 100th Wainwright, Watsons Dodd. Not I have to say the best hill but nice views.
- Cannot keep the big hills to the West out of my mind, it was to be fair a very atmospheric view.
- No sign of snow yet!
- Not bad for the end of November.
- Great Gable.
- Wow!
- Blencathera basking in the afternoon sun, taken from White Stones.
- Towards the far Eastern Fells.
So are the boots away for the winter? I hope not, but work may have other things to say about that. Time will tell.
