A quick drive from Scales to Thackthwaite and it was out into the sun and up through Galloway Farm and then decision time. Low Fell first, but would it be left and round behind the old Quarry or right towards the fence and a rather steep looking ascent. Well I'm never one for plodding the same path one way then back the other (if avoidable) so I chose the fence, OUCH! Tough on the calves but at least height was gained quickly and then it was a short trot to the Low Fell summit. Some great views across to Whiteside, Grasmoor, Crummock Water and the stand alone Mellbreak which I'm planning to do in the not too distant future.
It was then about a mile or so over to Fellbarrow which is a rather flat featureless hill and I was left thinking that it may be a decent place to wild camp. Other than that though I thought it as WH says suffers from its comparisons with its sister hill Low Fell.
