Whin Rigg and Illgill Head

I started these from Miterdale, which is quite hard to find as the road isn't signposted. From the car park a track leads up along the valley, through a muddy farmyard, and up the little ridge of Tongue Moor.

I then headed straight up the grassy slopes of Illgill Head. THis is steep enough to be hard work (especially if you're carrying a spare tyre), but after half an hour of grunting and wheezing I was up on top,and looking at spectacular views of Wasdale and the mountains beyond.

After the obligatory visit to Illgill Head summit cairn I then followed the path around the edge of the cliffs to take in the views, before heading up to Whin Rigg summit.

The descent, over the minor top of Irton Fell and then down a path through the forest, was fairly straightforward, although in places it was more like a river than a path.

Great collection of photos. Interesting to see them done from the 'back' instead of Wast Water, and see them in spring conditions! I was there in February.
