Wharfedale Three Peaks
Posted: Wed Jul 06, 2016 3:44 pmA fairly big day around the Wharfedale version of the three peaks.
There are variations of this you could try as part of a challenge walk and you could of course add Yockenthwaite Moor to make this into a four peak challenge.....although the merits of any visit to Yockenthwaite have to be weighed up well in advance. Today had simply had too much rain in the lead up for me to even consider it.
Windy and cool but staying dry with occasional sunny periods.
- Trig Point on Middlesmoor Pasture - a bit of a detour to get here but a worthwhile objective.
- Great Whernside across the valley - the weather looking decent.
- Buckden Pike higher up the valley
- The ridge ahead to Firth Fell
- Looking over to Pen-y-ghent with the top of Ingleborough in view. Darker clouds suggested rain but it never got here.
- It had been a pleasant walk along a well graded ridge (with just a few wet spots) when I reached the Trig Point on Firth Fell.
- The highest point on Birks Fell is further along the ridge.
- Back on the good bridleway descending to Buckden. This is the route I took up Birks Fell last time and I enjoyed it - being a far less trodden hill than the pike.
- Starting the ascent of Buckden Pike. A very popular walk.
- Looking over to Yockenthwaite Moor which could conceivably be added to this walk.

- The Memorial further down the ridge
- It gets very wet and muddy underfoot from here!
- Little Whernside - another wet and muddy place!
- After crossing the road most the wet stuff is behind you and it's a short climb up to Great Whernside

- The route down from Great Whernside via Hag Dyke has to be one of my favourite descents anywhere. Just lovely Dales walking.
