This walks start point was a quick bus journey from Xemxija to Mellieha. I must say for anyone planning on walking in Malta the buses are fantastic. They run regular, the routes are easy too as most go to Valletta and it is cheap. We purchased the bus card right after landing at the airport for €21.
This card give you complete freedom of Malta and Gozo, day or night.
The walk begins at the main roundabout at Mellieha bay and basically just try to hug the coast as best you can from the start. There are a few built up areas to negotiate at first. Mainly holiday homes and boat mooring areas.
- Mellieha Bay
From the built up areas a path is gained which heads along the coast towards Ras il-Griebeg which is an old lookout point.
- A path is picked up after the hoilday homes in Mellieha.
- Heading to the old lookout post of Ras il-Griebeg.
From Ras il-Griebeg the path starts to get more interesting with decent ascending and decending. The views get better also. This is an unspoilt little corner of Malta. Soon a lovely little beach is reached at Mgiebah.
- The first and fantastic view of Mgiebah.
- On Mgiebah beach.
After Mgiebah the going gets a little more rocky. If attempting this walk make sure you are in good shape because you seem to be away from the rest of Malta. There were millions of yellow flowers dotted around at the time of year we were doing this walk, giving the landscape a unique look. At other times of year it changes, the worst time being mid summer when the landscape is parched and it would be too hot for walking anyway.
- Yellow flowers everywhere.
After some rocky going underfoot St Paul's island comes into view with its statue and lookout tower.
- St Paul's Island.
After St Paul's island a small road is picked up to reach Mistra Bay. You walk around this bay and pick up another little path then some steps to head over a small piece of headland to Xemxija and to our finish point. The bus services are so good that even if you are not staying in this area this walk is easy to do using public transport.
- Mistra Bay.
