Karl's choice of route today. Appeared to be just a dusting of snow from the valley (there was a lot more on Helvellyn and Blencathra), so we didn't take our axes (Karl didn't have his anyway), but took crampons and Microspikes in case of ice. Tops were clear at first, but cloud started coming down on tops by the time we reached Scarth Gap. There was more snow high up than was apparent from the valley, but it was soft so didn't need crampons. Descent from Red Pike was fine in soft snow. The engineered path below Bleaberry Tarn was covered in thick water-ice, quite extensively in places, so we put on our Microspikes (Karl had an instep equivalent which didn't work quite as well - he was on his backside a few times). Had a pint of Old Peculiar in the Fish. Very enjoyable day.
