Berwyns: Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw and Foel Cedig

Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw, Foel Cedig and Cyriau Nod

There is an ATV track that goes virtually to the summits of Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw and Foel Cedig from the parking area at the top of the pass between Lake Vyrnwy and Bala. Cyriau Nod (previously considered the main summit in the group), requires the use of a rougher, but well used, narrow track leading off the ATV track. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it still has a well marked summit, for the time being at least, although how many people will make the extra effort required to reach it in the future is another matter.

The above peaks are high points on an extensive plateau of moorland between Lake Vyrnwy and Bala. The track is very well maintained and gives access deep into the range, which is perhaps just as well as the terrain otherwise would be extremely difficult. The photo below (taken from the summit of Foel y Geifr) gives a good impression of the terrain and clearly shows the track climbing up from the parking area.

The summits are, frankly, pretty nondescript, but it is moorland, however some of them could easily be overlooked.

We climbed Foel y Geifr and Foel Goch a couple of days later from the same parking area. Doing a round of all these peaks in a day (having coffee and a biscuit in the vehicle parked between the two sections) is very feasible, and for most,
the best way of doing these peaks. The only person that we saw on our two visits was doing just that.

The Berwyns are fairly remote and infrequently walked, despite the fact that there are some good tracks giving access into some of them. In five days of walking these hills, and one in the Arenigs,I only saw four other people on the hills.
