This is not the only "Devil's Punchbowl" in Blighty, maybe he's a heavy drinker. This one is a National Trust property, situated deep in the subtropics. As if that wasn't enough I chose a blazing hot day to explore it.

Started with a descent into woodland, which provided some much-needed shade.

On the free map was a place called Gnome Cottage, possibly because there was "gnome or information" forthcoming. I took a roundabout route to find it. Later I learned it dated from the 18th century, or thenabouts.

It was nice to see some Highland cattle on the way back.

I followed the signs for Gibbet Hill, unfortunately at least one sign was missing so it took a while to find it. I could hear a large road nearby, and my GPS map told me I'd already crossed it - pretty sure I would have noticed! Turned out that section was in a tunnel under the landscape. What a great idea.
