Cold Fell

I started this walk from the small car park just after Clesketts,from here I headed down the private road to Howgill where there is a choice of footpaths heading up Cold fell or the Gairs footpath.
I used the old mine track heading up Cold Fell before turning right at a boundary fence toward the summit of Cold Fell.On my ascent it dawned on me how much area on the northern flanks of Cold Fell had been planted with a mix of trees it was vast.Once these take hold, this Fell will look so different and I would imagine they will attract more wildlife to the area.
On reaching Cold Fells summit I took a bearing to head towards Brown Fell,there was a boundary fence heading exactly where I wanted to be.They love putting boundary fences on these North Pennine Fells.I descended down to the Gairs footpath turned right and followed this back to Howgill.

Looks a pleasant walk, hoping to do this in summer so its nice to see what the parking is like.

Theres quite a few new native woods being planted in the lakes, I presume its a global warming/carbon footprint thing.

You will see the extent of the planting much easier in the summer,it must have cost a fortune for that many trees.Its a pleasant area and the forest will make it even more so.

Nice little report ive been looking at Cold fell for a while!! same route as your report. So thanks for the info,is that Gairs farmhouse lived in ?? do you know? just out of interest because it looked pretty bleak!!! cheers

I didn't get close enough to Gairs farmhouse to tell if it was inhabited but your right it does look bleak and a hermits place to live.
Its a nice little fell to walk on giving great views (weather permitting) towards the Lake District,Eden Valley and into Scotland I had good views of Criffel and could see Galloway Forest Parks higher hills.

Cheers Userids, good info as always!!! i was wondering because it didn't look to accessible..im surprised somebody hasnt made it into a bothy or something similar.!!!!!!seems a shame to let it go to rack & ruin..
