Great walk. Clear vis at car park but mist from 50m. Usual enjoyment of superb views en route to Simonside inhibited by low vis. Navigated from Simonside by compass as map doesn't reflect terrain (showing woodland that isn't there).
Clear path from Simonside - forestry road initially, leaving on a quad bike track after 200m. It leads to a gate, after which there is a clear, but very boggy, path along the top of an escarpment (from which the views across the plain are superb - the mist having by now lifted). Good shelter at summit cairn - enclosing trig pillar).. Excellent nigh on 360 degree views too.
Retraced steps to foot of Simonside, followed forest road to picnic spot, Scotch pie, toat and marmale and lemon tea for lunch, then back to SP via Joe's Wood.
