I am helping somebody walk from Oxford to Loch Lomond with a mule for Walk for Earth and have mapped out and walked/driven some of the following
1. Penton Bridge to Langholm - all on roads
2. Langholm to Semye-Ling Tibetan Centre - mostly on roads but a few tracks
3. Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre to Moffat (Not done this yet - can anyone give me some advice - see below)
4. Moffat to Tweedsmuir - follows the Annadale Way and then crosses over the hills
5. Tweedsmuir to Biggar - goes up the eastern side of the Tweed to Broughton and then hopefully down the old railway to Biggar - I have not walked the last bit[/list]
6. Biggar to Wilsontown. - I tried to stay off the roads but ended up trapped in forestry.
After Wilsontown somebody else is mapping the route to Loch Lomond.
Mules are great at carrying a load but not at certain barriers.
1. locked gates or stiles
2. Cattle grids without suitable gates.
3. narrow passages (less than 1m50 wide. It’s ok if the narrowness is brief, eg getting through an opening, but not if it lasts for any distance longer than a few metres.)
If you know of any better routes or know the Samye-Ling to Moffat route do let me know.
