Is there any way of downloading the gpx route without the waypoints - they are distracting on the handheld

If you look in the gpx files you download from Walkhighlands, there are no waypoints. Either the software you are using or your GPS device must be putting them there.

Our route files contain only routes (consisting of route points), no waypoints or trackpoints.

Thanks Paul - are the routepoints little flags - when I download the file to my PC it appears in Basecamp from where I can send it to my E Trex 30 - but the route is full of flags??

It's the infamous Garmin "blue flag" curse. If a route does not have symbols along the track points, Garmin decides it will create them, and the first (default) is a huge blue flag.

Load the Route in to Basecamp, convert it to a Track, and then if you like covert that Track to as Route.
