Walking trousers

Walking trousers

Postby Manwaeadug » Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:13 pm

Looking at getting myself a decent pair of trousers for my hill walking & camping and wondered what were decent makes. I'm not looking to spend £100+ if I can help it, I'd be happy enough in and around the £80 range, but I do want them to be robust and not fall apart.
3 season, I'm not looking for lined ones.

I've been wearing Craghoppers Kiwi and although they are comfortable and have the pockets bang on, I kinda feel like I might take off in a strong wind.....they're a bit flappy!

Had a look at the Alpkit range, but the ones I noticed were canvas mountain pants, surely canvas would be a poor choice for Scottish weather?

Just wondered what folks on here wear to see if I could get some ideas.

As ever, any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Oh, and skin tight running leggings are probably not gonna look very good on me!

I use Craghoppers Kiwi Pro and Craghoppers Explorer as I like extra pockets. Both of these types are also full stretch making them very comfortable for steeper sections or scrambling. I don't think they're as robust as some heavier mountain types but that doesn't bother me - cheers :)

Montane Terras are fairly ubiquitous and you can get them for 50 or 60 quid if you shop around. I find Montane Terras to fit quite small and short in the leg so you'd probably want to try a pair on rather than get them cheap off eBay etc. Mountain Equipment Ibex are superb too but maybe a bit too heavy duty for warmer days. I think they'll run you about 75. The Ibex have a wallet pocket too which the Terras annoyingly don't.

Rockhoppers suggestion of the other Craghoppers models is the best place to start I'd say. Much easier on the pocket than some options.

I'd have suggested checking out Decathlon but for the fact you ruled out skin tight options

Jack Wolfskin Activate XT are priced at £80.Well made ,hard wearing, comfortable, stretchy & dry quickly. Have got 2 pairs, the first was four years ago, worn for over 150 hill days. Still look good. Hardly worn the second pair.

I don't really like the cut of craghoppers, but found Montane Terras to be pretty much bang on for me.

At the cheaper end of the scale: https://www.regatta.com/men-s-highton-multi-pocket-walking-trousers-seal-grey/

I wear these all year round, sometimes with cheap cotton longjohns in winter, but at that price you could buy every 6 months and still work out cheaper than expensive ones

I find them warm enough, good stretch and plenty of pockets.

They are maybe a bit outside your price range but I love my Paramo Velez trousers, you don't need waterproof trousers with them and they are comfy. And I really really don't like waterproof trousers. Not the height of fashion but very good.

Montane Terra pants. My first pair lasted nearly 9 years until I caught them on a latch and ripped them.

I’m another one firmly in the Montanne Terra trousers camp. By far and away the most comfortable, resilient walking pants I have owned. Very light, but as I say, also very resilient. The vents on sides help on sunny, warm days (so about once or twice in Scotland).
Be wary of the sizes though. Montanne gear I generally think I need to take a size up. Try and shop around and if you see cheap the use Go Outdoors price match for a further 10% off what the competitor offers.

I'm sold on the fighting Mac Alpine tartan........do I need the Enfield and bayonet though??

A few good suggestions, thanks folks. I like the look of the Montane Terra, I might go for them. They look a nice balance of cost v quality. I appreciate the heads up on the sizing (why can't manufacturers use a standard measurement, an inch is an inch, it doesn't shrink or stretch! )

The Paramo and Haglof look as though they would be too warm for me, I'd be happy to pay the extra for a pair that would outlast the competitors, but I reckon any sort of strenous activity in those and I'd be sweating buckets (I run warm). Same for the Jack Wolfskin ones, but they look like a decent winter option when my current soft shell ones are wrecked.

Those Regatta ones will be ideal for walking my wee dog.

Thanks again folks, much appreciated.

I run warm and find the terras pretty good for 3 season use. They are available in different leg lengths.
