Budget 1kg 2p Tent

Budget 1kg 2p Tent

Postby malrc » Fri Sep 25, 2020 3:48 pm

Hi All,

I usually hike with a friend, sharing a Naturehike Mongar (MSR Hubba clone) between us which weighs in at about 2kg including the groundsheet. I've been really impressed with the tent (stood up to some pretty high winds on the Mamores ridge), but it's too heavy for 1 person imho

I'm contemplating some solo trips and want to keep tent weight down to around 1kg if possible.

Something like the Nordisk Telemark 2 LW looks good, but is pretty pricey at £430 or so.

Are there any more budget (£200 or less) options that are worth looking at; need to be:

2-person (it's for solo use so doesn't have to be spacious, but I prefer the extra space over a true 1 person)
Light (approx 1kg)
Suitable for 3 season Scottish highlands

Any advice much appreciated

Have you looked at the other Naturehike tents?...all clones of the US versions.
Also the Asta Shelters. Aliexpress. Excellent workmanship. Trek Pole pitched.
The Asta 'Mid. ( Pyramid).
Also the 6 sided Asta Hexagon, 'First Snow'; like the Luxe Outdoor Hexpeak. Wind resistant. ( Mine is up for sale!!)
backpackinglight.co.uk may have something on their site that might suit...

I have looked at the various Naturehike options. The new Cloud Up 2 Ultralight 10D looks the best option at around £155 and roughly 1300g including pegs and footprint.

However, are you then better off shelling out the extra for the Big Agnes Fly Creek it's based on? Realise that would be around £320 plus footprint, but its fly is 20D and still the same weight.

I'm leaning towards thinking it's worth a punt on the NH, given the price saving, but is it a false economy in this case (worth noting it will only get used sporadically given I'm not able to get into the hills more than a handful of times a year at present)

Consider the 3F UL Gear Lanshan Pro. Well under a KG with all your ropes & pegs but requires a walking stick. The one-person is more like a 1.5 person it's that big, the 2 person version is bigger.

Think I'd be a bit nervous about a single skin tent in Scotland. Should probably have noted that in the original post...

Single skin tents are absolutely fine in Scotland. I've been using either the MLD Trailstar (Spring/Autumn) or the SMD Lunar Solo (Summer).

For a 1kg tent, you'll probably looking at a mesh inner which isn't much different to a single skin to be honest.

Prompted by this I've done some more research and clearly I was mistaken regarding single skin tents... so thank you, opens up more options!

Guessing for midge season you would need a mesh inner for a single skin in any case?

A lot of single skin tents have a built in mesh front like the Lanshan Pro or the SMD Lunar Solo. So an inner isn't required making them excellent 3 season UL shelters.

Aye, inside the LanShan vestibule area is like a standard two-skin tent anyway, a solid outer door, inner sleep mesh. You'll be inside the sleep inner, mesh door zipped shut, kit in the vestibule, just like any 2-skin tent.

Can anyone confirm if the Lanshan 1 Pro is plenty big enough for 1 person and kit. The 2 Pro is a chunk heavier, so hoping Pro 1 is fairly spacious for soloing

The Lanshan Pro 1 is essentially a 1.5 person tent. There's loads of space for all your kit and a decent porch for cooking in too. I've just seam sealed mine, so hoping to test it out property this weekend.

Did you manage to test the tent in the end? Keen to hear pros and cons.

I haven't been out in it yet, but I've also got the SMD Lunar Solo that I've used several times and they're very similar tents, so I don't have any reservations about it.

Pros: lightweight, easy to pitch, stable in wind, loads of room.
Cons: can be a bit drafty, condensation on still nights. (both common with single skin and mesh inner tents).

Trigger pulled. Pro 1 and footprint ordered from AliExpress.

Could you recommend a sealer? Completely new to seem sealing...

McNett Silent appears to be popular...

That's exactly the sealant you want. 8)

You'll get a syringe with the Lanshan to make sealing a bit easier. :D
