I thought those of us who use ViewRanger would be interested to read this.

ViewRanger is now part of Outdooractive and ViewRanger is no longer selling new subscriptions. Any existing VR subscripting will be honoured until it expires in 2021.

Outdooractive works on a subscription basis. When connect your ViewRanger account to Outdooractive, you'll be given a free period or a voucher based on what you own in ViewRanger. The subscription gives you the whole country, plus numerous other countries, rather than needing to buy separate subscriptions in ViewRanger. The maps are all up to date, updated regularly. And for OS GB, the maps are the high resolution ones, not available in ViewRanger.

Any gifted OA subscription will not automatically renew when it expires. OA charge an annual fee of €30 for Pro or €60 for Pro+ (or in-app £26.99 for PRO and £53.99 for PRO+).

ViewRanger credits do not transfer to Outdooractive, but they are taken account of when they set you up initially and obtain an incentive in OA.

You can continue using ViewRanger, it is not stopping, but we are only doing maintenance on it now, no new development.

Outdooractive bought the company behind ViewRanger, with the aim of combining the two to make the best possible outdoors app and service. Over the last year we've been working to add the best features of ViewRanger to Outdooractive (for example Buddy Beacon, Skyline, Wear, Challenges), and that continues, with the aim of making Outdooractive the best app. So we do expect most people will choose to move to Outdooractive over the coming year. But you are welcome to stay using ViewRanger too.

I use Viewranger for free but have purchased maps from them: OS 1:50000 and 1:25000 full GB

I’m hoping to carry on being able to access the maps I purchased on Viewranger indefinitely.

I won’t join OA.

Been using Outdooractive app for a few months now,its getting better but the tracking results are a bit hit n miss which can be disappointing!

I’m using Topo GPS very happy with it a good replacement for ViewRanger, I looked at Outdooractive but I found it to cluttered and not reliable.

I glad to see there have been big improvements in the OS mapping app recently. It now seems quite useable, with sharp map images, offline zoomability, and reliable tracking with screen off on my Galaxy S8.

Can you now follow a route and create a track at the same time? Not being able to do that put me off it in the past.

I don't know. I'm just using the free version so far. The basics seem to work well. From what I've been reading of the feedback on google play, it's much improved recently.

I've no idea, I've always just used my Garmin watch to create a track (export the GPX from Connect or Strava later), as I like having my phone on airplane mode to preserve battery life. Was out on a local corbett for 4 hours last week, started off with phone at 96%, was at 88% when I was back at the car.

The guys at OS usually respond quite quickly if you ask them such questions.

Garmin handhelds you can follow a route and record at the same time so it wouldn't be surprising you can do the same on their watches.

Certainly you can follow & record in Oruxmaps.
