Mosquito coils

Mosquito coils

Are these still any good?

For avoidance of doubt, I'm talking about the little green coils that you set fire to and which smoulder for several hours. I've used the pyrethrum ones in the past, and they work well to deter midges. I've either run out or lost my stock, so need to buy some new ones. It sounds like they've changed the formula to use parallethrin instead. Some reviews say this no longer works very well.
What's other people's experience?

I bought some Lifesystem coils and I think they were more effective in a semi enclosed space. I found that out in the open they were pretty much useless.
