Thanks all for the info in this thread.

Having been caught out twice in bad situations alone and without signal over the years, I thought I'd check the O2 coverage map before heading up. Very poor. Vodafone looked good, but EE indeed does appear to offer higher quality coverage.

2nd SIM ordered for my smartphone, and a cheap Nokia with its own SIM to live in my rucksack - as I've also had a smartphone brick itself before although not on a mountain. Also wouldn't want to be swapping a nano SIM on the mountain, with a safety pin to open the little tray!

It'll also be useful for texting my safety contact straight away once back at the car.

Just remember that SIM cards get automatically deactivated and the number recycled if not used for 6 months.
The definition of use is sending a text message or making a (chargeable) call.
