Looking for a rucksack to replace my Karrimor Hot ice from the 90's. Around 30-40 litres was thinking Osprey or Lowe alpine.

I had a Karrimor Hot Ice followed by one of the made in Sheffield POD's and wish I'd got them repaired and hung onto them.

I now have an Osprey Mutant 38 which I am very pleased with. Relatively simple, works through summer to winter, weighs approx 1100g and critically available in two sizes. I can just squeeze the kit for an overnight camping trip into it. I don't climb but like the simplicity of climbing 'sacs. I bought it direct from Osprey using the 40% Mountaineering Scotland discount.

Had a good look at the Lowe Halcyon which was well made but couldn't see a longer back size in the 45l.

Tbh, the discount can only be used online direct from Osprey website, where most of their items can generally be found cheaper, if you do a bit of digging and shopping around.

Ive had a north face 35L rucksack for years, but never quite comfortable on long walks. Replaced it with an Osprey Kestrel 48L one last year.

Yes its probably too big for a days walk but i have a large heavy camera that didnt fit well into top of the north face one. I can wear the 48L one all day long and not even notice I have it on. Also has one side zip that goes straight into main compartment without having to open top. Built-in waterproof cover good as well so you never forget it.

A shame, looks like it finished on 31 July. I used the 40% code to renew my day, winter and multiday packs, and I couldn't get anywhere near the 40% off price direct from osprey anywhere online.

Good choice, I have the 36, cracking bag, not the lightest due to all the bells, whistles and padding, but it's comfy as hell and really stable.

Recently replaced an ancient North Face Patriot with Lowe Alpine Airzone 30L. Have had it out a few times and been pretty impressed overall. Like wee pockets on waist belt, decent side pockets and simple design with easy access to main part of sac. Ideal day pack . My only gripe with all these modern packs is the need to either use a cover or put a dry sac liner inside to ensure it’s waterproof. Can understand drive for minimal weight but seems pointless if you have put liner in and don’t like rain covers- a hassle and blow off too easily

I use a clear bin bag for a liner. Weighs nothing and can see what’s inside.

I got a set of 5 different colours and sizes of waterproof bags on Amazon, you can also get clear ones though if desired. Small red one is perfect for a first aid kit, up to the largest ones which are good for clothes or food.

Same here cruachan, I have them all packed so that when I get the tent up I know which ones I need in with me, not digging around looking for smaller items, works brilliantly.
