Garmin 64 s OS chip

Garmin 64 s OS chip

Postby mynthdd2 » Tue Nov 23, 2021 7:40 pm

Hi

Does anyone know where I can buy an OS 1:50K UK chip to replace one that 'fell out' when I was changing batteries in the 64 (design fault apparently...............but the supplier failed to mention this - thanks lads)

OS have one at £200!!!!!! but not sure if it fits the 64? Alternatives includes buying a 65 or 66 at silly prices (so not an alternative) or to sit looking at a shell of a GPS

Thanks

EBay Great Britain Premium OS Maps 1:25 1:50, they're about £40

Example listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303471888144

Works on almost everything including the 64, but not the Montana 700 series or GPSMAP 66 series.

EDIT: and you will be able to ADD a TalkyToaster (OSM) map to that too and be able to switch between maps.

Hmm, I see Garmin TOPO Great Britain V2 PRO 1:50K microSD/SD card at £200. That would be the equivalent of about £1 per map if they were paper maps.

Then there is this ebay site just mentioned which will sell you the same thing for £40, actually better than the same thing since it has 1:25K as well as 1:50K: TOPO GREAT.BRITAIN PREMIUM OS MAPS FOR.Garmin HANDHELD GPS.UNITS 1:25k 1:50k. That looks more like the "Garmin TOPO Great Britain V2 PRO 1:25K microSD/SD card" which others sell for £350.

But the ebay one is ".Micro SD card & SD adapter only No packaging"

Hmm, why would they sell something worth £350 for £40? And why would it have no packaging? What a puzzle.

And why will people contentedly fill up their tanks for maybe £75, which will be burned off with a small number of Munro-bagging trips, but balk at paying maybe £200 for detailed up to date maps of the entire country that will be good for years?

I think its because they are "older" editions so will probably suffice for almost all hill trips. I don't own a copy of the £40 EBay one and did go for the TalkToaster version which is really good but I am just so familiar with the OS maps that anything different look "foreign" so I will probably pick up the Ebay one just to have both.

Its frustrating with OS as I subscribe to their service and I think its really good value but if I want to use their maps on anything other than a phone then you are looking at the £200 cost mentioned earlier. It would be great if they have a Premium Version so you can use OS mapping on Garmin devices which are much better GPS units for winter trips in particular.

I do have the £40 one, it works nicely. Obviously it isn't in-date but it suffices. That's why it's nice to have the TalkyToaster too, because it might have newer trails on.

Does anyone know if this file can be transferred onto a Garmin smart watch like the Fenix or Epix ?

Have a look here : https://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping/help/ukgarmin.html

This is, essentially, the same mapping that Walkhighlands now use - and it works on the Fenix watches that will take maps.
