Sleeping mats

Does anyone know why sleeping mats tend to be narrower than sleeping bags?

Because once you actually get in the sleeping bag, it's width reduces considerably. It only needs to be as wide as you need it, ie your physical size.

Also saves weight and bulk in your pack. The rectangular shaped Exped mats are a bit more forgiving if you want a bit more space.

Maybe another reason is so that you can put the roll mat inside the sleeping bag, stops you you from rolling off it
