Looking for bargain Crampons

Looking for bargain Crampons

Postby SMRussell » Thu Oct 25, 2012 8:28 am

What with news of the coming Arctic blast I thought it was probably time to get some crampons for my Scarpa B1s so if anyone has seen some C1 crampons going for a bargain price please give me a shout :D

agree, i was in go outdoors coatbridge a few days ago and there was at least 30 pairs waiting to be purchased!!!

other than that you can usually pick up a pretty good pair in Ebay! but stick to known brands is my advice.

Thank you. I've just started hillwalking with my bf. Seen ppl just waltzing down mountains even across rocks. How do they do it. Is it skill or something to do with boots?

Definitely a potential option - haven't got a Go-Outdoors discount card though...

These look good and the shipping would be free :D However my B1s are a UK size 5 and these are for size 6 and over :(

Caberfeidh there is no need to be a bam. Karen stated that she is new to hill walking so give her some slack eh?

Karen, I'm assuming you mean walking over boulder fields? I guess there is a level of skill or simply getting used to differing terrain as well as increased fitness level. And better quality boots do make walking over rocks easier as they are designed for such purposes. You'll simply become more aware of these things the more you hike :D

Karen

Yes there is a skill which you get by practice, getting fitter and getting stornger. Mrs Santa and I took some beginners up 3 peaks in May and were amazed how difficult they found walking on rough terrain and a bit of snow - even a bit of gravel on a path was enough to cause some major scares. Confidence makes it a lot easier but you only get that by taking it easy at first..

In general crampons will only help in steep snow and ice. Mini spikes will be a help on flatter ground (and uncleared pavements)!

Gooutdoors have got a north rigde ice axe on the cheap too! The discount card is a no brainer, costs 5 quid and you immediately recoup that on your first buy.

Cheers all,

have since tried on a pair of Grivel Monta Rosas with my Scarpas. Good fit. So ordered a pair from go-outdoors (£72 - a little more than the others but I've tried them on the boots so I'm happy). Done.

I got the North Ridge crampons and ice axe last year, they reduce them to £40ish each from time to time. They are rebadged Grivel Monte Rosa crampons & Munro ice axe, all the packaging, tags etc is Grivel and the only difference I could see was the colour & branding.

Yes i am new to hill walking so sorry for being an idiot to all use experienced hillwalkers but i am pretty clueless. I am going shopping on sunday for some decent walking boots. Lovely boyfriend is treating me, tho walking munros is going to get hit on the head with this snow apparently coming, so going to stick to low level walks until the weather improves.
