What protein do you take?

What protein do you take?

Postby stewspyinsky » Sat Apr 12, 2014 10:09 am

Hi all.
I am heading to Rum next month for an eagerly awaited break and wondered what others taken in the way of protein on their trips.

I usual take dried rice, Smash and pasta for carbs but was wondering what others took to mix in.
Last year I found some flavoured TVP in Morrisons but can not loctae it this year.

Suggestion sgreatly appreciated.

Stewart.

babybels (only buy them when on offer which is frequently) nuts, peperami sticks, sometimes sausage rolls or pies but only for the first day as they get a bit squashed on a multi day trip. Jerky is nice if you can get it. grated cheese. but if it is hot it gets oily, which is why the prepacked variety can be better (tho more expensive).
pasta sauce in a pouch adds flavour. Bacon can be pre-cooked and will then keep better and be less heavy and you can either eat it cold or reheat it.
last weekend we had sardines mied into pasta with a packet tomato sauce. it was nice, but I wouldnt generally carry sardines or anything in a tin. but this time we were not carrying it.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have taken the tuna on a couple of trips.
Never thought about bacon but its a good idea. Take your point on the cheese etc.

The TVP I took last year was excellent. It came in a cumberland sausage and other favours too and all I did was pre-mix it with Smash and then added water boiling water as required to make quite a tasty meal but cant find it this year. If ayone knows where I can get it I would be greatful.

I am away for a week so need it as light/compact as possible.

have you looked at dehydrated meals on a site like outdoorsgrub? they are quite expensive but dead easy for multi day backpacking and taste fine if you are hungry and outdoors. You can add extra cheese and salami for flavour too.

Lidls do small tins of mackerel in olive oil which are delicious, so delicious I even had one for breakfast whilst backpacking because I was bored with porridge. Cheap too

I like to turn over rocks and eat the woodlice I find underneath them. I saw Ray Mears do it once so it must be good for you.

What, you eat slaters? Oh not for me...
I did eat some sugar ants and a witchetty grub in Oz.. The ants were surprisingly good.. The grub less so..
As a teenager I ran away from home, and lived on Salmon (such a hot summer they were all trapped in the river pools so you could catch with your bare hands) and a snared Hare.. Good times
These days, I like jarlsberg cheese and polish kabanos for my lunch or dinner on the hill 8)

Och, if I had any memory at all, I wouldn't have to write walk reports
I don't think there was much walking involved anyway.. Just out and about in Ross-shire for a couple of weeks..
