What's in your bag?

What's in your bag?

Postby DavieCharles » Thu Jul 31, 2014 10:51 pm

My son and I have walked to two Bothies, our first was to Over Phawhope (after a night on Loch Skeen), the most recent being a walk to Peanmeanach after a night on Morar's stunning sands. I'm 40 and he's 12 so naturally I want to bear the biggest weight. On both of these trips I feel we carried far to much (trip 1 had breakfast in a tin x2, litres of water, gas canisters, solid fuels ...)

I do like to ensure I have a change of clothes for both us and waterproofs but, I'd like to know how we should pack better (I wanted to carry a tent but didn't as I wrongly assumed the bothies would always have room) so for ...

Overnight; going on the assumption the bothy may be full?
A one day walk; out and back 8 hour walk?

... If I were to tip your backpacks/rucksacks out, what would I find (apart from some slightly annoyed walkers :-) )

Just how much water did you carry in?

Maybe you tell us what was in your pack and we can help decide on weight saving options?

On the first pass I'd say lose the tinned wet food, minimise the carried water (if you can't find water in the Galloway hills you're doing something wrong)
For a single overnighter one gas canister should be ample. I usually just carry a 100g canister for a two-nighter. If you need more, consider a more efficient stove.

If you're bothying then the solid fuel and obligatory bottle of whisky is standard issue but heavy. If you're going for the bothying experience then crack on, it's part of the culture, and if you have fuel and whisky you'll easily get a spot in the bothy!
If you're taking a tent, just plan a camping trip and forget the fuel and booze. If you want a failover in case the bothy is full, take a bivvy or plan the trip on a weekday when they are less busy.

Lots of options, all depends on your priorities and preferences.

Uh oh spreadsheet alert!

A fine list, you could probably knock a couple of kilos off the baseweight without any drama, but I'm guessing that's a generic year-round list rather than season specific.

even worse its actually the wrong speadsheet  , i didnt actually know id posted it and dont know how to delete it, must have pressed the wrong button while mussing :D .

As i was giving it the once over i realised it hasnt been updated for months, trail and error has removed a few bits, (the NF mules were crap in early morning dew etc), aye its very much a three day or more list, for one night id dump all the extra clothes (except the down jacket a pair of socks and the water proofs) the powerbank and some and spare batteries :D

My first multiday hike pack has
mountain hardware lamina 35 sleeping bag
vango 200 something tent
thermarest
vango inflatable pillow
trangia and fuel
firesteel, knife, spork, cup, wee trowel, lighter
noodles, rice pouch, cup a soup, sweets, dried fruit and nuts, macaroons, coffee, sugar, oatcakes, peanut butter, chorizo
fleece, spare socks, boxers, baselayers, hat, head net
smidge, painkillers, duct tape, plasters, hand sanitizer, toothpaste
hydration pouch
headtorch
travel towel
maps
compass

All weighs in at near 13kg, though the tent alone is about 2.5kg. Could do with getting the weight down a little, but the nice featherlight tents are a bit pricey for me.
And that doesnt include my camera. Good thing I'm only doing short distances per day.
