Hi - in cold winter weather should I use lithium batteries in my GPS and head torch?

Lithiums do last longer in cold weather but not all headtorches are compatible with them - check with the manufacturers instructions first. They are also very expensive compared with alkalines. Most headtorches will accept rechargeables, which tend to be a bit better than alkalines in the cold. More expensive to start with (and you will also have to buy a charger) but cheaper in the long term if you use batteries a lot.

have also found that the "stay charge" and/or hybrid types seem to be better as well - cheers :)

Definitely use Lithium's but check the head torch spec, as noted above.

Don't bother with Ni-Cad rechargeable there're a waste of time at low temps.
Ni-mh rechargeables are the next best thing to Lithiums. They do however suffer from memory effect & self discharge during storage.
