Walking poles and headtorches

Hi all,

Apologies in advance if these are really stupid questions!

What's the purpose of the rubber cover on the tip of a walking pole? Is it for different surface conditions?

I recently bought a Petzl Tikka RXP headtorch and it has a red LED light and there's a slot next to the usb charging port - any idea what they are for?

Also, can anyone suggest a good outdoors shop that actually has staff that know what they're talking about and can provide good unbiased advice? I'm based in Glasgow.

The rubber tip is for hard surfaces - metalled roads etc

The red LED to is to preserve night vision (for reading a guide, but not a map)

Did you try the two Tisos (Buchanan Street and Cooper street)? I used mostly these stores. Also got some stuff from Cotswold in the westend.

Tiso and Cotswold are full of wannabees and Walter Mitty characters who make out that because they work in a gear shop they are masters of the craft. Bollox they are. The trouble is that the big corporate chain stores can out-price the small private stores and drive them out of the market. Best shop I've found for knowledgeable staff was Craigdon in Aberdeen. It's a long way to go for a chat... Have you tried joining a club? They're also full of bullshitters, unfortunately.

They handy when packing poles in trek bags so the tip doesn't rip the canvas. Also mandatory on the Inca Trail so you don't scratch the ancient stonework - so there's good excuse to go to Peru!

That's what I thought in regards to the walking poles. Forgot about the fact that red light preserves the night vision!

I don't really ask them for advice on gear.

For info - the slot seems to be a vent for a heatsink (http://www.crank101.com/petzl1/). I guess if it gets hot enough perhaps Caberfeidh's right and you could use it to make a brew!

I got an email recently, and they apparently do services discounts (ie NHS, Fire or Police etc) I wonder if I can get a double discount for being both an NHS worker, and an Mcofs member?
