Garmin Tech Question

Garmin Tech Question

Postby willsdad » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:39 am

I wouldn't say I'm a technophobe but I'm no genius.....

I have a Garmin 64s which l basically use for location and distances. I'm sure it can do many other things but I've never really been interested.
My wife has just asked a good question though.....is it possible for her to watch where I am 'in real time' on the laptop at home?
Surely the GPS connection would allow the device to be tracked?

She now wants me to stress she doesn't boil bunnies  She worries about me for some reason.

Short answer - no. Your gps is a passive receiver, it can't transmit back.
However the specs say you can pair it with a smartphone which does then enable tracking. Getting a decent phone signal though would be troublesome.

I think there are various apps/sites which allow you to broadcast your hike live, but I think they broadcast to anyone, not just your wife, so you may not want that. They also rely on you having a phone signal for live updates.

Viewranger on your phone can do a "buddy beacon" but it depends on phone signal. Then you can give a code to your wife or other trusted person who can see where you are by logging in to viewranger on their computer at home

Thanks for the replies. I kind of guessed that would be the answer
She will just have to live with the 'I'll contact you when possible but if you don't hear from me by......'
