earthing cables....

earthing cables....

My outdoor backpacking kit is principally composed of silk (sleeping bag sheet that is and not undies) and merino base/mid layers etc (which does include undies). Getting the things off involves sheet lightning and me getting a mega spark off the nearest metal item.....suggestions?

Go outside and stand in a stream or puddle whilst taking them off. That will earth you.

Cover your entire body in a layer of vaseline before getting dressed.

Seriously, silk plus wool means static. Ye canna break the laws o' physics. You could try earthing your clothes first - dampen them and touch them to a tent peg maybe?

If it bothers you that much, take a tumble dryer sheet with you and rub it all over before undressing.. might freshen you up too

...so by standing in a puddle, covered in vaseline and then rubbed down with some sort of sheet (?) will solve it?

Yes! Exactly!

More seriously it's physics. The materials that you are wearing (actually synthetics are usually worse) build up a static charge on them due to friction, particularly when you drag them over your body taking them off. This discharges through your body or whatever bit of metal is nearby.

The static buildup is worse in the dry because dry air (and bodies) conduct less well than damp or wet air/bodies.

You could go camping in the rain...
