Just gear snobs, don't worry about it.
I would put MW at the bottom of the pile of what you and your mates bought, but even that is way better than cheap gear was 20 years ago. You did what was absolutely the most important thing; checked it fit and was comfortable for you. Trespass stuff is quite well thought through, but like MW, its bought to hit specific "discounted" price points.
Regatta stuff is aimed at the lower to middle end of the market, yes, but I've always found it to be well made and long lasting. The fabrics might not be quite as high performing as some, in terms of breathability etc, but they always seem durable. Nowt wrong with it.
If those chaps genuinely thought your gear inadequate, it shows they don't actually know what they're talking about. Unless, of course, you'd chosen some of the "fashion" items from Regatta's range rather than the walking stuff
Did the gear protect you from the elements? Sounds like it did, and that's what matters.
