One man tents for the hills

One man tents for the hills

Postby Quincy » Fri May 11, 2018 1:50 pm

I'd like to get some of the more remote munros done this summer so am looking for a lightweight one man tent that's not a pain to put up in bad weather and poles wont snap at the first sign of wind. Doesn't have to be roomy just average priced if possible as prices seem to vary hugely. Anyone got some advice on favourites? Probably going to try having a look in Cotswold outdoor in Fort William at the weekend.

I like my Terra Nova Laser Comp.
Not the cheapest but I also got a 2 man version on eBay for about half the new price.

A slight faff to put up, but not too bad. The rain hood for the pole is a faff, but largely unnecessary so you can do without it on most occasions.

Thanks for the info. This was one of the tents I’d had a look at but wasn’t sure how difficult it was to put together judging by the reviews. Will check it out.

If you do go for the laser comp, make sure the pegs are suitable. The original ones were wee carbon fibre things, utterly useless. I think the new ones come with better skewers, but it's best to have at least four titanium 'vee' pegs for the four guy lines. Skewers are generally OK for the other peg points.

I have TN comp and now a hilleberg Anjan. Both are lightweight tunnel tents. I like to do summit camps. I kind of regret spending on the Anjan and wish I'd used the money for a free standing tent with crossing poles as i think they are much better in wind and on uneven ground. TN voyager has been recommended often on here. As has the scarp 1/2 which is a tunnel tent but has optional crossing poles. Has to be imported from US

Well have purchased terra nova and has been tried and tested. Bit snug the two man probably better and one of the plastic clips joining inside and out keeps popping open so maybe get that checked. Also found it difficult keeping inner and outer shells separate but maybe there’s a knack to it. But easy to take down on a wet soggy morning I have to say!

I was browsing some recent gear review last week and came across the SlingFin 2Lite Trek reviews. Check them out. :)

Great to meet you and your other half on Ben Hope. First WHer I've met outside of a meet since I joined the forum. Always great to share stories. I'll try and get a walk report up in the next few weeks. Heather
