Boots with good edge for scrambling

Boots with good edge for scrambling

Hi guys, any recommendations? I have been using Salomon GTXs https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07171NXGQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1, which are great for walking and scrambling, to a point. When it gets to smaller foot placements, something with more of a defined edge would be much better. Waterproof and lightweight a must.

Several brands specialise more in this kind of thing... Salewa, La Sportiva, Scarpa, Dolomite & Dachstein (if you can find them) among others. They tend to categorise these sort of boots as "approach" footwear.

All those mentioned make good quality stuff so it's just a case of trying some pairs on. I wear LaS TX4 shoes which are not waterproof as the tongue is not gusseted, but the large rand means they are fine for all but really sodden ground (when you are unlikely to be scrambling much anyway). I'm happy climbing up to about v-diff in them if that helps.

Curious about this also - working/living in the US at the moment but returning to Scotland for a few weeks in Sept and not planning to take up valuable luggage space with boots - in the attic in my UK home, I have some Scarpa Manta pros which I refuse to wear outside of winter, and some Merrell walking shoes, but am just looking for something that can do 3-season hillwalking and scrambling up to grade 3.

So far, top contenders are Salomon X Alp MTN Goretex which appear to straddle that fine line between walking boot and climbing boot, or the La Sportiva Trango TRK GTX which appear to be fairly lightweight, with some edging capabilities. I love my Nepal Cube GTX in alpine conditions, so I guess I have La Sportiva feet rather than Scarpa feet - I think it makes sense to stick with brands that you know work for you (although I'm aware that the lasts vary even within the same brand).

I've just spent the last week in the Tatra wearing my Salomon Alp X Mid's.

After a seasons walking, from 15mile days chasing DofE groups, a few Munro's and last week of scrambling, I'm very happy. I'm a Salomon 'fit' anyway. They're light. Dry. Supportive enough while feeling like trainers. Reasonable edges, grippy enough. They do start to struggle in the wet, and a new pair of Adidas trainers with Continental soles have shown how grippy new boots can be compared to them...
Last week in the Tatra they were ideal, properly brilliant.

Good to know, I ended up ordering a pair of the same (but HIgh instead of mid, just personal preference) at a good price online so hopefully they will do pretty well when I hit the munros again in Sept (a good mix of long multi-peak days and grade 3 scrambles.
