Using performance underwear like the professionals

Using performance underwear like the professionals

Postby simon-b » Sun Sep 16, 2018 10:27 pm

We enthusiastic amateurs who take on active pursuits are sold on the idea the best gear is worth parting with our hard earned cash for, right down to underpants. For climbing mountains, cycling, playing sport, working out or whatever we are offered the chance to buy expensive breathable synthetic or merino under garments to 'do the job'. So what do the professionals wear? Check out World Cup and Premirship star Romelu Lukaku's choice (people who live in England and Wales may have seen this already on Football Focus):

They look just the thing for winter outdoor active pursuits!

Icebreaker - expensive but no issues with chafing even on long hill days. Depends on whether you suffer chafing or not.
Or use sudocreme and normal underwear. Is that TMI?

I have an Icebreaker pair, which are great, a pair of I think they are Calvin Klein, which are, well, quite anatomically well shaped. Odd, but very comfy.

Alternatively, who needs underwear?..

Surprisingly, they only bite you round the knees. They don't seem to like flying up under the kilt.

Maybe it's just me...

my best outdoor undies are a multipack from Primark for not much money
I don't normally shop there but my daughter and I have different ideas about comfort in undies, she bought them and found them uncomfy and gave them to me.
light, quick drying, comfy and most importantly the seams don't come anywhere near the rubbing points for rucksack belts. The expensive pants I have purchased for outdoor use have their seams in all the wrong places.

Merino wool underwear are a waste of money, they don't last.

Instead I bought a 3 pack of Adidas sport boxers for £15 in Costco and they're excellent. Wick well and no chafing like cotton boxers.

Horses for courses....
As long as they have a comfy wide flat band at the waist( no rubbing under hip belt) & around a 6" inch inside leg (to stop chafing), I'm happy.
Tropical climes...synthetic micro mesh, airy & quick drying.
Subtropical....synthetic, quick drying
Temperate climes...synthetic again, I just change into thermals at beddy byes.

Synthetic can get stinky on longer hikes so rinse when you can.

Paw paw ointment works wonders if you ever do get that burning chafe that makes you walk funny to ease the pain. :)
