Crampon straps?

Crampon straps?

Postby Outnabout » Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:30 pm

Bought a used pair of stubai Tirol crampons, noticed that it's missing some straps that goes over the centre of the foot, the strap would need to be a loop at one side and clip at other. A Google search doesn't show any that would suit mine. Any ideas where to get them?

I've seen those straps, they don't have a loop to hook onto the crampon. I will upload a picture maybe easier to see than me describe

Do you have b3 boots as thats what they fit, the front bail clips into a toe piece.

Those look like step-in crampons to use with stiff boots, possibly designed for plastic boots. As such they may not have had an "over the boot" strap, just the ankle retaining strap, the rigidity of the boot keeps them on with the toe bale fitting tightly into the groove on the toe of the boot. Some also had an extra strap from toe bale to ankle strap I think. However, you wouldn't then have expected to see the hooked side pieces. These may be an optional extra, and seem to be a different metal.

Got a pair of Aku spiders that fit the crampons but when in them I does look as though it needs the strap in the middle for extra security

I believe that those crampons may have had a chain arrangement which utilised the hooks at the side.

I don't think that's a chain - just a lashup job with a bootlace!

Indeed, its bodging a c3 crampon onto what looks to be a b0 boot.

If its definitely the b3 spider and the crampon is fitted correctly it should hold itself in with the front and rear bails.

Hello,
As has been alluded to earlier the boots are incompatible to the type of crampon.

Don't know about AKU boots....but I guess like other boot makers there will be a range of boot types for different uses on the mountain. Possibly these AKU ones that you have are fairly 'bendy' and the last thing that you would want is a crampon that does not stay attached to the boots for all of the time that you need to have them 'doing a job' on the terrain.

Buying step-in crampons without checking they fit your boots well is a bit risky! Make sure that the front bails really are a good snug fit onto the boot (even if this means some "remoulding") and that the front welt of the boot hasn't got worn down by kicking the cr*p out of too many rocks. One possible failure mode is that the boot can twist out sideways when traversing steep or uneven terrain, so check for that, as an extra strap doesn't really help prevent this: it can happen if the bail is less curved than the boot toe. You also want to adjust the heel clip so that it is as stiff as you can get it while still being able to clip it shut.
