Garmin GPSMap 66s

Garmin GPSMap 66s

Anyone own the 66s and have 1:25 os maps loaded on to it?

I'm looking to buy the 1:25 UK but at the price they charge I'd like to see a screenshot of the map quality on the device.

I've looked at the cheaper maps option talky ect, but I want the better quality os maps.

Keeping my eye on eBay for hopefully s second hand sdcard too

For £23 per year you can have OS maps on and off line.

I'm happy with the screen size, it's just the picture quality that I'm unsure of. Especially after zooming in, it's a fairly new unit. Hopefully someone has this and has used it with that scale.

Don't bother too expensive and raster mapping so blurred IMHO.
Try looking online there is a free 50k mapping nearly on a par with OS mapping. Forgot the name but easily found and not ""talky" or toasty

If you're using a Garmin device and not using Talkytoaster maps you're missing a trick.

You can use his maps on Basecamp too - he even makes a free one - they're just incredible. They're frequently updated and unlike the OS maps they're vector and thus zoomable with gridlines.

There are some other maps around based on OS Opendata. They have more topographic detail (woods, streams etc) than those based on Open Street Map. They also have pukka rights of way where the councils have released the data - but not in Scotland.

The maps look good - though the conversion process looks a bit of a pain. The talkytoaster maps I'm using have streams and woods... certainly in the areas I know... are you saying it's missing some?

In some areas, OSM mappping (from which Talky builds his) are very good and comprehensive. But they rely on volunteers so rarely visited areas can be very sketchy. Whereas the OS survey in detail on a cycle of a few years making their mapping very detailed - but they can become outdated.

Just to illustrate the difference in detail of areas that are not very popular - so don't attract many Open Street Mappers - here is a comparison of a corner of Herefordshire. Coordinates are around 52.15N 2.78W. On the left is mapping built from OS OpenData plus Rights of Way from rowmaps.com; on the right is Open Street Map.
