Laser Competition. "End Pole conversion!

Laser Competition. "End Pole conversion!

Postby crfishwick » Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:52 pm

Have had an original LC for a few years. The original end poles are one piece although the latter designs are collapsible. Therefore the tent can be carried as a smaller volume. Unfortunately Terra Nova cannot or will not supply spare end poles!

Anyone converted the originals to be collapse? And how did you do it..

TIA

I just used spare alloy tent poles and made sure a joint was in the middle.

Of course, very slightly heavier than the original, but nothing significant.

Give me a clue! At the moment using plastic drink straws care of Wetherspoons' seem to work a perfect fir. Although not ideal

Some places make custom ultralight tent poles, e.g.

It says to contact them if you require a custom length, they have a web-form for customer contact.

Job done. Emailed Stuart and got sorted. Although a bit pricey for 2 bits of carbon rod.😁 Should have bartered and got the price down.😂

I'm the epitome of cheap & cheerful / bargains galore but when you do pay a whack for something good, especially if it's custom, you always feel bloody good when you use it. :D

I really hope this isn’t my first post on here as I used the Munro ticker years ago, so it doesn’t look like I’m spamming a recommendation, but the Bearbones kit has a strong following among the bikepacking community. I’ve considered a carbon pole set for my tarp, but end up taking my Laser Comp 1 when I need proper shelter anyway.

I too have been looking for end poles for the Terra Nova laser competition. I had the folding ones and stupidly left them at a French campsite. I have managed to get a suitable length of carbon fibre rod but need to know the exact length to cut it. If you have the folding poles could you possibly measure their assembled length for me?

Many thanks,

Ian

In case anyone is looking for some information, I've just repaired the folding carbon end poles on my Laser Competition 2 (not sure if other versions are different). The assembled length of the rod (not including the knots and end ferrules) is 555mm; the length of the plain half without the joint piece was 293mm. The original diameter rod is about 5.35mm but I could only find 5.0mm which can be made to work well enough.

(Incidentally this is the second repair of the same pole - the original snapped in a storm almost exactly four years ago in the same range of hills as this time!)
