Day pack to carry inside multiday pack??

Day pack to carry inside multiday pack??

Postby LailaQuiche » Wed Aug 28, 2019 12:24 pm

Hello!

So I'm doing the Affric Kintail way in September. We're planning on starting in Cannich rather than Drum and spending the 3rd day in Glen Affric doing some hills.

Obviously I will be carrying all my equipment in a large multiday backpack. I would like to leave most of my stuff in the tent where we've set up camp. I don't really want to take my large backpack up the hill when it only really needs to carry a few bits on bobs (food, water, layers, poles).

I was thinking of buying one of these light packable backpacks to use for the hill walk.

https://www.trekitt.co.uk/38765/products/osprey-ultralight-stuff-pack-poppy-orange.aspx?currency=GBP&gclid=CjwKCAjwzJjrBRBvEiwA867byua4oQ1k0gca7-WSD6Tp9CrAep2qOyPz_rfdiy2WcfptJ4TToBU-1hoCra8QAvD_BwE

Does anyone have any experience of these? Or any other suggestions for what to use?

Obvious drawback of the one shown above is there is nowhere to attach my poles.

Thanks! :D

I have the North Face equivalent.

It's brilliant for carrying inside a camping pack then using for walks from a wild camp up hills. There's no padding on the back, but if you fold your waterproof jacket up inside that works as padding.

As you say, you can't attach poles, but I just use one and carry it in my hand anyway.

The Osprey has a great rep, but if you're looking for a packsack with trekkling pole loops there are some available:

I've got a seas to summit one that folds into itself and is very small and compact, and also the north face flyweight one, which is compact but not as small. I always reach for the north face one as its a lot more function even though its a bit heavier.

I'm not sure if they still do the same version of the northface pack that I have anymore, it is a 19L backpack that takes a good load in, you can use the zipped pouch it folds into as an internal zipped pocket for you phone, wallet, etc, and it has a great outer pocket for putting stuff in it that you need quickly. It also has great shoulder straps that aren't padded but they are quite comfy.

I think the new version is smaller and lighter, and made with different materials but probably still worth looking at.

I have this Osprey pack. I bought it for same purpose.

I find it to be too flimsy. Everything bounces around. It is a poor fit for support. There is no real structure and very loose. Straps dig into shoulders if there is any weight at all.

I bought a Haglöfs LIM lite instead.

Should have said, I often use mine to carry climbing kit so a bit more awkward and heavier than walking gear(for which I also use it for) you see them in use a lot in the continent.

I think the disadvantage of mine is that the straps keep sliding off my shoulders. I have solved this by pinning a tape across the front, but it does seem a design flaw common to a lot of these things.

Don't bother just use your normal sac. At least it will be empty so it's weight is negligible.😂
Why carry more weight when not needed? Unless it doubles up as a dry bag!

Have to admit that's what I generally do - I use an Osprey Exos 58 and it's quite comfy when all the camping gear is out of it and I've just got my day essentials :D . I have used packs where the "lid" detaches and can be used to carry a smaller amount of gear strapped around the waist, but I can't really be bothered with the faff of this now.

Similar view here. The very light packs are very light because they've cut down on all the useful stuff like padding and straps and pockets.

maybe something like the exped summit lite for a more fully supportive backpack?

Whatever you do, don't try to carry one full pack on your front and another on your back. I tried it to Ben Aden with all the food on the front, and I felt as if it was cutting off my blood supply.
