Jeans question

Jeans question

Postby Mearnsgeek » Sun Sep 22, 2019 6:35 pm

Hi,

I may well do this experiment myself but I wondered if anyone had treated a pair of jeans with Nikwax Tech Wash or equivalent?

My motivation is the fact that I'm trying to find a new pair of walking trousers. I'm a bit overweight and I tried on some Craghoppers Kiwi and Kiwi pro which I could get in my size. The problem is that they seem to assume that if you've got a larger waist you're going to have massive chunky legs as well which I don't. The result is that they were stupidly large, and flappy round my shins which I know would have driven me daft.

So, back to the jeans - I realised that I've got a pair of jeans which fit perfectly and they have a bit of stretch in them so they aren't at all restrictive. If you treated them to solve the problem of them being a nightmare when wet, would they be usable on the hills?

Any thoughts? Alternatively, if there are any trouser recommendations too that would be great. I vary between 40-42 inch waist.

Thanks,
Mearnsgeek

Worth a try with the jeans - just make sure you have a decent pair of waterproof trousers, and that you stop to put them on before your jeans absorb too much water.

Try tracksuit trousers, and if the lower leg is too flappy, use gaiters.

If it's the same craghoppers I have then i also found the legs pretty flappy and i wouldn't say I've skinny legs. Maybe try other brands. Mountain equipment ibex fit pretty neat and have good stretch. They've also lasted me ages. They are for cooler conditions.

Frankly, even if they're proofed enough to stop absorbing water, I can't imagine being comfortable walking in jeans. I, for one, would overheat, but they're also a bit heavy for most walking in my opinion.

I find Decathlon's walking trousers to be quite narrow in the leg (a good thing for me with skinny legs), even though I go up at least a size to get them around my waist!!

I too find Craghoppers fit a bit odd, and I'm normally a pretty standard "medium".

Having unexpectedly ended up waist deep in bog at the weekend I can't imagine how awful having to do the rest of that walk with wet jeans would have been!

I have a pair of Kiwis and even with a 30" waist they seem to have a ridiculously baggy cut. I wore them on the hills in my early days of walking and gaiters just meant that they were baggy around the thighs...

try a pair of Salomon's tapered leg wayfarers, they are quite stretchy so you could try a 40" waste?

they also have their alpine wayfarers (slimmer fit) in a 42 in the sale.

I tried to make a belt out aromatic herbs.

It was a waist of thyme.

Agree with suggestion for track suit bottoms - but use polyester or similar, as cotton takes too long to dry once wet - and it will get wet however much you 'proof' it .

I see Alpkit have brought out some trousers that look and feel like jeans but are actually technical fabric for going outdoors in. I'm not sure why I'd bother though.
