Gloves for Gabbro

Gloves for Gabbro

Postby soniajackett » Mon Jan 20, 2020 5:05 pm

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for some gloves/tape. Aiming to have a crack at the Cuillin later this year and I've heard the gabbro can be pretty nasty on the old hands

Generally I always wear thin cheapy gloves (unless it's particularly hot) when hill walking as my hands get pretty chilly. But will need something a little more technical for Skye I think!

Thanks very much in advance.

The full ridge? Gloves not required unless cold and wet! Gabbro should not be a problem unless you have extremely sensative hands.
Gabbro is brilliant as your hands literall sticks like S to a blanket

I wrecked a pair of gloves on the Cuillin, so next time I bought some of these builders gloves from B&Q

https://www.diy.com/departments/site-secure-handling-gloves-large/3663602671732_BQ.prd

I got some thin ones & some thicker ones & they worked a treat in both wet & dry conditions. The palms are cut resistant, so they still look like new. Picture on the web site does them no justice.

ps, take a spare pair, guaranteed someone in your party will thank you for them.

Good to know
Ha no, not the full ridge (I wish) weather allowing we've got a few days so we'll get a couple in hopefully at least.

@aabruce that's absolutely fantastic! Thanks

Similar to Bruce

Wrecked my decent gloves on the Cullin.
Get a pair of 2 quid garden gloves - those yellow ones with the rubber palm. They'll do.

Just notice your nom de plume  So a lady?
Therefore suggest a few pairs of tight fitting cheapo synthetic gloves. Not expensive ones as they will get kn*ckered.

Yes a lady! Thanks all, a few pairs of cheap gloves and some site gloves too. Sounds like a plan.

Exactly which parts of the cuillin are you planning on doing? There's plenty you can do that's not technical scrambling and therefore unlikely to do too much damage to your gloves.
If you're worried, then wear cheap gloves and treat them as disposable.

Done all the Cuillin and never needed gloves not unless the temperature was going to be zero, would only need them if serious scrambling was involved or maybe delicate hands.

Hi all thanks for further replies. Hard to know some people say wear gloves others I guess are a bit more seasoned

Not 100% sure as haven't done any of the Cuillin before so thinking about starting with something easy to get a feel for it (Banachdich maybe - no gloves needed there I know!) but the two I'd most like to do are sgurr nan gillean and Alasdair.

We are not averse to some scrambling (love it) so quite looking forward to it. Of course any tips or suggestions welcome.

I used an old pair of fingerless cycling gloves, I like to have my fingers free for scrambling. I've heard some people recommend gardening gloves, so they don't wreck their good hiking gloves. 8)
