Can any one recommend a route tracer phone app which records the walkers movements on Ordnance Survey format ?
Also is there a phone app which allows phone to be used as GPS handset and can give your location in OS grid ref format.
Apologies if this is already well covered elsewhere on here.
Many thanks

The ViewRanger app is excellent.

However one caveat is, if you're relying on your phone as a GPS unit, then make sure your phone is in flight mode to preserve the battery level.

I use Viewranger for OS. Also Strava but no OS on that.

There is the OS maps app which can perform as a GPS handset, but you have to go to the OS website first, create an account and upload your route in to it, sign in to the app and then it should synchronise your routes.

You could also use the OS locate app which will provide your a grid reference.

Caveat is i know the OS Maps app works without a signal, but unsure if the OS locate app does or not.

On Android, Locus, BackCountryNavigator, Alpinequest and Orux all offer OS coordinates in their applications.

Strongly advise against using OS Maps App. It's a very poor bit of software full of bugs and the GPS tracking is nowhere near as good as the viewranger app. It also still has issues storing offline maps. Worth having as a backup if you buy the paper maps and have the code to use but not something to be relied upon.

Me
Carry a map and compass and know how to use them
Have a cheap (ish) GPS - etrex20 which allows track back.
Download OS locate as backup if the gps fails which will give you a 6 figure grid ref- even in flight mode.

Should maybe explain , though I do my fair share of walking , my enquiry has more to do with work.
I need to record exact locations of habitats and even single wild plants or trees during my surveys .

Stick " track plant locations " into Google. Answers could help. Tested the below link and may help.

Hello... When I signed up for a year use of the OS maps on the phone the OS Locate button came with it....six fig ref and the 100 kl two letters also...found it very accurate. My daughter does surveys in the Highlands and uses this app. To pin point features etc.
Not sure if you can have the Locate button without taking the 20 quid maps for a year.

You can use OS locate independently of the OS Maps app. I use OS locate all the time

I use OruxMaps and it's great.

It's also the only app I know of that you can import TalkyToaster maps into.

I use OS Maps but will be switching to Viewranger when my subscription is due as recent updates to OS Maps have been of significant detriment, e.g. crashing and reduced battery life. It was better when zooming in didn't change the scale of the map.
