Before lockdown i started getting into Hiking more and looking at more Munros to tackle , so for a wee beginner i had bought some mountain warehouse boots but after 5 Munros later and some wee sub 2000 they are starting to let me down .

I have recently bought Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Womens Hiking Boots but they have not arrived yet , so i'm wondering what you guys think of them or if you have any recommendations for a women's boot .

Not sure if this will help or not but coincidentally I also have a pair of Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Boots on the way to me in the next couple of days ordered at the weekend. My current summer boots are Salomon Quest Prime GTX which I think are a little more flexible than the Ultra 3. I like the Salomons as they're very lightweight for summer wear and the soles give good grip even on steeper, grassy slopes. The goretex lining has worked well so far (touch wood) and kept my feet dry. One quibble though, once wet on the outside, being fabric they do take a lot longer to dry than my leather boots ( Meindls and Scarpas). My wife also has a pair of Salomons (not the Ultra 3 though) and finds them very comfortable. My Quest Primes are a full size bigger than my normal shoe size so I did the same when ordering the Ultra 3 pair over the internet. I wouldn't normally buy boots this way but there was a good offer on them; I think the boot last is different so the fit may not be as good in which case they may need to be returned but will wait and see.

All of that said, I haven't been on a hill since January so who knows when I'll even get to try them. I'd have to go a lot further than 5 miles to find a hill, even a sub2k, so am praying that Phase 3 will get here soon....

My favourite boot. Get a bit hot in mid summer and only last about 1000 miles. I have had a couple of pairs start to leak but they have a good warranty and have had them replaced both times. I currently have 4 pairs, 2 older ones which I use in the garden and for local walks and 2 pairs for longer walks and backpacking.
Not suitable for full on winter but ok with micro spikes.
I also order a size up (my feet swell on longer trips). I change my socks at lunchtime and never have problems with blisters.

Just to add to the note above, mine arrived in the post. Unfortunately even though I went a full size up, they're still too tight across the bridge of my foot so will need to be returned. Comparing them to the Quest Prime, they look narrower than the latter - I think they're made with a different last which may explain it.

With the exception of winter, my Ultras are brill. I have done many a Munro, long distance walk including CWT in mine (and had relatively dry feet, but it was good weather) and really comfy. I am on to another pair as my first did what Salomon seem to do, and began to leak. They were well out of warranty and managed to get another pair at a good price in Go Outdoors. That however was a couple of years ago. So if they fit you when they come, they will hopefully serve you well as mine have.

Hello All ,

Thank you for all the comments , mines arrived and they fit well and so comfy . i have read a few reviews about the boot getting made in India and Vietnam. Vietnam being slightly better made .

I have already done two of my local Lomond hills in them and no bother at all , ive seen people say they didn't take much breaking in .

I am hopefully going to complete their first munro this weekend if the rain stays away so i will see how the perform but i have no doubts :)

Good to hear. Glad yours fitted well. My problem is a not very long but wide foot. Fingers crossed for your weekend.
