Softshell jackets?

Hi guys, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm looking into picking up a softshell jacket, it'd be used for anything from a summer walk to a winter hike into the hills. I was looking at the ME Astron and the Rab Baltoro Alpine, anyone have any opinions on these or fancy pointing me in the direction of a more suitable alternative?

Price backet is flexible as long as it's going to do the job.

Was looking at the ME Astron myself at one point, but the bits under the arms put me off as they aint windproof and that was half my point wanting one.

not got one yet so cant say what i find works but recent edition of TGO Chris Townsend recommended

Montane - Sabertooth @ £150 which is pretty nice looking too
Millet - Pro Touring Hoodie @ about £150 aswell

Ive had a regatta soft shell for 3 years and only recently have had to put a waterproofing coating on it. It a great jacket that my mum picked up for me for something like £25 from GO Outdoors. It is a great jacket that is waterproof (to a certain extent) and windproof. I have used it for walking and fishing and it has always kept me warm and with a light waterproof jacket over, always dry. I will probably upgrade it at the end of the summer as its getting a little small but its been a great jacket that has served me well without a huge price tag. Maybe worth looking at the regatta range to see if they are still in production, or whether they have upgraded the model. Just also add that my step dad had a berghaus soft shell and the regatta out lasted it by a year

Hi, i have been using a Rab Baltoro guide jacket for some ice climbing this winter, may be the same one as what you are looking at, unsure but i have been really pleased with it, warm comfy, very tough and will keep out showers(quick drying), i only carry a light waterproof jacket incase the rain comes on heavy.

Will probably be to heavy for summer use but for this time of year, ideal..

I've seen gaynors advertising similar to this on a couple other sites too.

On topic: I bought myself the ME Astron. Wore it up Lochnagar the other week in a helluva gale, so much so that you literally couldn't stand without your crampons firmly entrenched into the packed snow on top of the ladder. Kept the cold and wind off great though, yet to test it in the wet though, seems a good purchase so far!

ive got a rab vapour rise jacket, its like a tracky top with a hood

its allright like but the pocket came away inside after a couple of uses, been hearing lots about rab shoddy workmanship these days

I've got me two softshells.

One I've had for a while is TNF Cipher Windstopper, it's really lightweight and does what it's supposed to which is stop the wind from getting to you. It's fairly good a keeping out the wet too. Wore this walking to work everyday and only a torrential downpour penetrated it! picked this up new at £125.

My other, recent addition, is the Berghaus Badile softshell. Have worn it out during the snow period just after New Year through Alva Glen, and have worn this up Stuchd an Lochain and Meall Ghaordaidh. In Alva it was blowing an absolute gale, and only hvaing a base layer on underneath I was both warm and dry, thanks to it's thermal, almost fleece-like lining. Because of this it is a heavier jacket and cant see me wearing it if the weather keeps going the way it is. Picked this up in Cotswold for the tidy sum of £100.

It's worth considering a Buffalo Mountain Shirt - softshell before the term was even invented!

Suitable for use year round unless it's baking or lashing down, in which case would you wear any other softshell anyway?.

A totally practical, hardwearing and simple piece of kit (just the way I like kit!), in the real winter weather it doubles as a fleece under a cag.

I'm on my third one; not bad considering my first was somewhat over 20 years ago....
