There is an excellent special bus, the AD122, which runs along the route of the wall from Easter until late October - Carlisle to Hexham. The full timetable disappeared from the Hadrian Wall Trust website a few days ago but I'd already downloaded it should you need want it.

Which did you prefer, walking E to W or W to E?

A difficult one to be honest. I enjoyed it in both directions - E-W because it was ending somewhere I hadn't visited before and W-E because I was virtually walking home. Obviously, W-E also has the advantage of the prevailing wind.

The best bit is the central section between Gilsland and Chollerford and I'd probably say that was the better directionas you get most of the ascent out of the way in the first half.

Glad they've put it back up! It disappeared over the weekend when my friend and I both found it to be missing.

I thought it might have been updated to include the extra buses shown on the sheet I picked up on the bus on Monday

Hi GillC, you'll love it, it's a great walk :)

As for tips, yup, that's what I did, planned my trip according to accommodation availability. You can book accommodation a couple of miles off the path, as there is a bus service along the way to get you back to where you are starting from next in the morning.

Food is limited, mostly pubs which open at 12 noon.

Great time you had there. I did some wee sections as a teenager but never more than a couple of hours. Might do it all one day after reading this 8)

I'm heading back there for a couple of nights over the Queen's Jubilee weekend. £160 in total for all three of us (me, my sister and my niece) for return fares to Carlisle and two nights in a family room at the Once Brewed Hostel. Not bad, eh :) .

My friend and I will be doing the section from Birdoswald to Carlisle tomorrow so we might see you.

We're not going until June, Fellwanderer :? , when we have two extra bank holidays off for the Queen's birthday and Jubilee 8) .

We'll be heading home on the Monday but apparently they'll be lighting beacons along the Wall then as part of the Jubilee celebrations :) .

Hello Walk Aboot - Sorry I missed the report (maybe as I don't often get to look in the LDW forum as 99% seem to be WHW - That may be a sligt exageeration). As i have said elsewhere I am suprised by the variety of landscape. I would love to walk this on my todd.Especially the up and down bit. Like the lamb photies. Where is your next planned trek

Thanks, Andy, you'll love it when you get a chance to do it :)

No further plans yet but I might squeeze another LDP in in Autumn

May well be up around Housesteads over that weekend at some time.

Had a good day on Saturday - just making it to Carlisle in time for the 3.56 back to Newcastle. Met more walkers that day than any previous day out on HW this year.

Thank you for this post. My friend and I are going to repeat your walk in June. We did this walk a few years ago but over four days. We did (D1) Wallsend to East Wall Houses, (D2) East Wall Houses to Housesteads, (D3) Housesteads to Walton and (D4) Walton to Bowness on Solway. We had a good laugh thinking Day 3 was going to be easy as it was only 18 miles and we could have a good rest before the long Day 4. It nearly killed us! It may have been the shortest distance, but it was certainly the hardest with all the ups and downs.
So we have decided to join the few "eejits" and repeat the walk doing your route.
I must say, we are pretty dreading D3.

That's really jammy that you guys are doing the walk again, Michael. I enjoyed it so much I took my sister and niece back there for a long weekend.

Don't forget to post your trip report once you've done it
