Hi
Dropped my newish Tilley hat on the walkout from Suilven on Friday 16th April, it must have fallen from the side pocket of my pack so can't say where abouts on route. Would love to hear from you if it has been found.

Many thanks

You didn't happen to notice a peckish-looking elephant hanging around did you?

ELEPHANT EATS TILLEY HAT -- THREE TIMES

(As time passed, so did the Hat…)

"From time to time, we get asked if this is actually a true story. Some seem to think that perhaps it more of a myth or a fisherman's tale. However, it is a true story - all of it. We even have a picture.

The Hat-Eating Elephant

Michael, an animal trainer from Ontario, Canada, used to train elephants. One of his ‘students’ developed the habit of snatching off and eating Michael’s beloved Tilley Hat. Time would pass. Michael would find the Hat, wash it, and carry on. When we asked him to give us his well-travelled Tilley for our mini-museum in exchange for a new one, he declined.
(We were secretly pleased!) "

I might have had more chance of getting it back if there had been !

Sadly the lifetime guarantee doesn’t cover loss just ingestion by wild animals 🤔

In 2004 I was in Australia and got myself an Akubra hat, wide brimmed and excellent. I wore it around Oz, exploring, trekking and prospecting. On my return to Dear Old Blighty in 2005 I went for a wander on Rannoch Moor, near Rannoch Station, and suddenly my hat was gone. I assumed I had dropped it and the khaki colour camouflaged it so well that I could not see it. I forgot to check for elephants. Perhaps this is just part of the Great Hat Migration, they migrate North at this time of year. I saw some geese doing the same.

I expect a similar migration to all the hillwalkers lost gloves marching northwards and leaping off the cliffs like lemmings

You must have read my mind, I was going to ask you if you had a theory on the odd socks that appear in my laundry and here you have provided the answer

It is a valid theory - we must follow The Science!

Ronald Turnbull in one or other of his Cairngorm books speculates that hats have an agenda of their own, get fed up with same old, same old walks on same old heads and, as it were, jump ship for a more exciting life. Maybe Suliven wasn't exciting enough for your hat and it yearned for the Cuillin. On this principle, I always used to adopt hats I found. This one was left in my shop by (obviously) a Canadian the year the Achille Lauro was hijacked and all Canadians were advised to cover themselves with maple leaves so they wouldn't be mistaken for Americans. I was trying to give it an exciting time on Rhysy

Funny that you mention finding a Canadian hat. I found this one on Fionn Bheinn (Achnasheen). I posted on here that I found it, but no interest. I washed it and still have it but never wore it. Maybe it didn't fit I can't remember.

I like the idea that hats have a mind of their own. :D

A noble sentiment - I am sure it will find its place...
