Identification help please

Identification help please

Postby rockhopper » Fri Sep 22, 2017 8:59 am

I've looked through various potos and sites to try to identify the bird in the photos below - they're not good as they were taken at extreme zoom and moving but I was wondering if the bird is a juvenile golden eagle or am I completely wrong ? - anyone have any ideas please ?

Not an eagle, looks like a common buzzard to me.

It is for sure a Goldie, not a buzzard. It's a young one, as you correctly identified. The colour pattern in your photo gives it away, the white all along the lower surface of the wings. You'll see pictures if you google "juvenile golden eagle in flight". For example, http://jacumbabirding.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/EGK_6003.jpg

Many thanks for all your help everyone - it's been very useful - cheers :)

BoyVertiginous - I was part way up Sgurr an Airgid and it was soaring above Morvich and Strath Croe before flying off southwards.

I'm really surprised. I haven't ever had good views of goldies, but all the pics I've seen seem to indicate spread primaries, a heavier set body, and a longer head.... I would never have guessed this as a goldie.

I'll be interested to get David Main's view also...

Pleased to be wrong on this one, thanks for the tip. I'd see the dark areas on the front underside of the wing and thought buzzard, but you're right it should have had a dark strip along the trailing edge too. I'm learnin'!

Thanks and apologies for the hassle.
I'd initially looked at the RSPB site as we're members but just wasn't sure which it was - of course, the poor quality of my photos at extreme zoom doesn't help  - cheers :)

We saw eagles on Sgurr an Aigrid, and I'm sure I remember others reporting them there as well.
