Looking for help in identifying this bird seen at Appin. Pure white and like a heron but smaller.

Little egrets seem to be winter visitors as far north as Appin

Yep, Little Egret.

They've been steadily increasing in numbers for a few years, and now seem to be found across the whole country.

They are solitary birds and can turn up in surprising places. I saw one far inland in Hampshire in a hedgerow drainage ditch with no more than an inch of water. Here's a couple of pics of one in Poole harbour.

I have seen one at Morton Lochs near Tayport in Fife.
