Spotted on my walk around Lundie Craigs last weekend...so what is it, frog or toad?
Extra kudos if someone can enlighten me as to the species and how to tell the difference please 🐸

Common Toad, Bufo bufo. Differs from frogs by having shorter leg designed for crawling not hopping, dry warty skin not slimy as in a frog. Colours vary. More terrestrial.

A Puddock can be a frog or toad.

"A Puddock or taid is a craitur sib tae a frog that bides on laund an in fresh watter. Growen puddocks can lowp faur wi their lang shanks."

I'd say this one's a Frog going by the two lines that run down the back from behind each eye, you don't get that in Toads. Plus there's the dark patch behind the eye, not very obvious in this beastie, but it's there.

The colouring and head shape scream "common frog" (Rana temporaria) to me, but they don't look so warty in my experience. The toads I've seen had more pronounced warts and a wider head, so my guess is it's a lumpier-than-usual frog.

Thanks for the responses everyone. 👍🏻
Certainly explains why I still get confused telling one from the other! 🤪

Toads crawl, frogs hop.
