Hi, not sure that Fallow range is that far west. Red deer calves are mottled too.

I think you may well be right. Here's one I came across on Am Faochagach some time back.

Certainly a roe deer. The young are properly referred to as kids, but fawn is used too. Red and Sika deer have calves and Fallow ahd Muntjac deer, fawns. Confusing isn't it? 😁

I suppose I would just be thought of as hopelessly anthropocentric (is that the right word?) if I called them all babies. The one we saw thought husband was its Mum for a while when his shadow fell on it, but then it realised it had to hide and played dead by his feet. We thought we had better move on quickly in case she didn't come back.

It should have been hiding in the long grass, the doe only comes back to suckle occasionally. Maybe it was hungry and wandered off.

BTW the original Bambi was a roe deer.
